Anniversary Message from Consuelo Faust

So it all began in 1979 as an idea and a lark. The idea: dancers teaching for the general public and having a ton of fun while sharing the high of moving — even flying — to music, letting intense lowdown rhythms lead us into deep physical places, using our dance technique to guide, shape, show. The concept grew as we grew. Help support dancers, create a feminist organization, enhance community among us and thereby give back to our greater community. To my joy and amazement we are here 40 years later, still doing it.

At our celebration on Sunday, December 29th, love was palpable. We were celebrating the victory; in 2020 San Francisco we are still here dancing together through it all — through the harshest of times for our country and the toughest of times for artists in our city. At this moment it’s important to savor who we are and all that we have: the many bonds we share with one another, the pride of our diversity, the beauty of our place, and the exhilaration of dancing together. Victory!

For the wonderful day, I thank our volunteers, greeters, caterers, curators, T-shirt sales people, photographers, videographers, front desk staff, and cleaner-uppers. For the long haul, I thank our steadfast and supportive partners: ODC in San Francisco, Berkeley Ballet Theater in Berkeley, Motion Pacific in Santa Cruz, and the School of Richmond Ballet in Richmond, Virginia. A big thank you to Maggie Connard and Janet Roitz for their ongoing thoughtful, dedicated work in the R&M office. I am deeply and forever grateful to Dudley Flores, Director of Rhythm & Motion, who is carrying our vision forward into the future. Thank you to our teachers, past and present. You are the heart of our company.

And finally, my most heartfelt thanks to you, our students: this is your celebration, it’s your Rhythm & Motion.

Consuelo Faust
Founder and long-time Director of Rhythm & Motion

Rhythm & Motion 40th Anniversary Gallery

An exhibit showcasing photos, words, memorabilia and video from the company’s 40-year history was on display at the ODC Dance Commons from December 29-31. Below you will find a walkthrough video of the exhibit along with the video that aired inside the gallery that highlighted R&M events and performances from 1996 through today.

All-Star Class Music Playlists

Want to listen to the music from the memorable team-taught Rhythm & Motion All-Star classes? Just want to add some new tunes to your personal library? Check out the playlists from both the Rhythm & Motion Modern and Fusion All-Star classes.

The music on these playlists features tunes from the early 1980s through today and is a fun way to sample music from over the decades and R&M’s musical influences over the years.

Support the Work

The Rhythm & Motion team was thrilled to offer a day of free dance classes and events to 350 dancers; we had a wonderful time and we hope you did too. Thank you for being a part of making the day special for all of us! If you had a great experience at the celebration and wish to help offset some of costs to produce the event, please consider making a non tax deductible donation to Rhythm & Motion. Please contact Program Administrator, Maggie Connard, by emailing maggie@rhythmandmotion.com or calling 415-549-8522

And, keep dancing with your local Rhythm & Motion community. Spread the word and tell a friend about this Program, the work we do and the good vibes we create together! As our Founder, Consuelo Faust, mentioned in her message, “It’s your Rhythm & Motion!” Let’s keep it thriving for 40 more years and beyond!

Rhythm & Motion would like to extend an extra special THANK YOU to our San Francisco partner, ODC, and their incredible staff, for playing a huge part in helping to make this celebration possible.
