SUMMER WORKSHOPS

Join this exciting 4-week workshop and perform in a Michael Jackson tribute show. Featuring choreography to Michael Jackson’s: “Dirty Diana”. The performance will be at Club Anton in Jack London Square. Please note: choreography will have an adult theme. August 1st through the 22nd. Tech rehearsal TBA. Showtime is Sunday night, August 29th, 2010.

 

A native San Franciscan from the Mission District, Christiane has developed her own style and technique by blending street and club moves with formal training studied since age 5. She was a member of Culture Shock and the director /choreographer for her own company, Rare Form. Christiane teaches regularly at Rhythm & Motion/ODC Dance Commons.

 

 

 

 

 

Dancing Through Life with Priscilla Regalado

Have you been longing for a class for the older, mature dancer? Have you danced for many years or returning back to class after an injury or time off and want a gentler class? This workshop will be inspired by jazz, modern, Latin, Pilates, Qi Gong, meditation, and improvisation. We will experience various movement styles to an eclectic array of music while being mindful of our bodies as they are in each moment; how and what we are wanting to experience and express at this point in our lives and to feel the passion, joy, and grace of movement through our ever changing bodies.

Priscilla Regalado began her dance training in Los Angeles over 45 years ago. She is a graduate of Cal Arts and has taught, performed and choreographed in the San Francisco Bay area for over 32 years. Priscilla has choreographed and performed with her own dance companies, taught in many SF Bay Area dance studios and has worked with other local dance and theater companies as a choreographer, performer and movement consultant. She has
been honored with awards, grants and two Izzie nominations. Priscilla was on
faculty at The American Conservatory Theater (ACT) teaching, choreographing
and mentoring in the MFA program for 21 years. Teaching dance for 11 years
at SF University High School, she also choreographed 15 musicals. She is a Certified Integral Life Coach whose business, Dance With Your Life, works with artists and women over 50.

Bollywood with Namita Kapoor

You've waltzed, samba'd and discoed till dawn. But do you Bollywood? Even if you don't know what that means, you're probably a fan of the music: The bouncy strain of Indian soundtracks fused with folk dance, hip-hop, reggae, salsa and electronica has been co-opted by the recent craze of Slumdog Millionaire and music stars like Jay-Z ("Beware of the Boys"), and Britney Spears. So come learn the hottest new dance craze moving west! Experience how to islolate your body and dance to funky beats in a cardio-based blend of hand-twirling, torso-turning, shoulder-shrugging and aerobic legwork. In this Bollywood Performance workshop we will work on one stellar Bollywood dance production for 12 weeks and learn one continuous string of Bollywood choreography, culminating with a performance. Don't worry if you're just beginning, this class maybe just the trick to transform you from dance-hall dope into Bollywood phenom! All levels welcome. Pre-registration is recommended.

Namita Kapoor is an interdisciplinary artist who combines dance and visual art. Her credits include performing with Jazz Tap Ensemble, the first national tour of Bombay Dreams, The King and I, and various other national/international shows. She currently performs with Keith Terry's all body band, Crosspulse and recently danced alongside Mike Myers and Jessica Alba in The Love Guru. Namita teaches tap, jazz and bollywood dance throughout the Bay Area.

 

 

 

 

Clogging with Barbary Coast Cloggers

Clogging is America 's first folk dance and came together when immigrants from different cultures shared their music and dance with each other.  The results were bluegrass and clogging.  The first half of the class will focus on beginning clogging steps mixed in traditional square formations set to bluegrass music.The second half of the class will focus on the evolution of clogging.  Over time, steps continued to evolve and incorporate more intricate movement.  Set to contemporary dance hits, the class will get a little more down and dirty as we learn clogging that embodies more of a hip hop vibe.

The Barbary Coast Cloggers (www.barbarycoast.org) are a non-profit organization founded in 1981 and have performed all across North America at world fairs, national clogging events, the San Francisco Ethnic Dance Festival, including performances with Nancy Sinatra and right before bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs! Ian Enriquez has been performing with the company since 2004 after completing his studies in dance, with a focus on the influence of African dance. Prior to joining the group, he performed with dance ensembles in the Philippines, England, and Oberlin, Ohio.

 

 

 

 

 

Contemporary Dance with Chimene Pollard

This Performance Workshop is designed as a place to play and explore creatively while learning skills in partnering, timing, precision of movement, and stage presence. Each session begins with a full warm up involving the voice, body and mind. It will allow you to take time out of your busy lives and focus on where you are in the world in finer detail all while experiencing improvisation, collaboration, trust, risk, and release. I hope that you will walk away from this workshop with a deeper sense of your creative being and a greater sense of community.

Chimene is a teacher, dancer and choreographer and has been teaching in the Bay Area for the past twelve years. She graduated from UC San Diego where she studied Communication Theories and was introduced to Jean Isaacs (San Diego Dance Theater) who ignited in her the love for Modern Dance and teaching. Chimene both studied and was a company member of Anne Bluethenthal & Dancers and Terry Sendgraff Aerial Motivity. Her own work has been seen in recent years at the Choreographer’s Showcase at Dance Mission Theater and the Pilot and Migration Series at ODC. Flamenco with Danica Sena

Flamenco LAB will take students of mixed level experience with Flamenco music/dance on a deep and playful exploration of Flamenco rhythms. No matter what your personal "level" you will be challenged in creating layers, sounds and patterns with your hands, body and feet. Props such as manton, castañuelas, baston, and abanico may be used by those who have prior experience but are not a pre-requisite for this workshop. Flamenco shoes/character shoes are a must.

Danica Sena is a choreographer/performer who is internationally recognized for her extraordinary energy and artistry. Her Mediterranean roots and an undying passion for knowledge has led her on a decade-long journey to master the art of Flamenco/Spanish Dance and Culture, and to the development of a unique methodology that has lauded her superior as an instructor of both youth and adults. Along with her complete and eclectic dance training she is a consummate singer, musician (piano, flute, violin) and actor and her original choreographies have been performed throughout the U.S., Spain, Mexico, Japan and the Czech Republic. In 1996 she founded the International Ago Arena Dance Festival in Ugata, Japan which received critical acclaim and is still active today. As a performer she has shared the stage with Ojos de Brujo, Noche Flamenca and renowned director John Mauceri at the Hollywood Bowl, Larry Vuckovich, Carmela Greco, Deepak Chopra, Compañia Rafael Aguilar, Soul Force, Rosa Montoya Bailes Flamencos, Ana Gonzalez, Daniel Doña (Baile Nacional de España,"Chanta la Mui")and La Tania. Ms. Sena brings to her students a dedication to excellence while maintaining freshness and sincere joy in the learning process. She is proud to be on faculty at ODC/Rhythm & Motion and currently teaches both Flamenco and Fusion Rhythms Dance Workout.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hip Hop with Kory "Kato" Watkins

This workshop will consist of fun/challenging Hip Hop choreography, which will include techniques such as Popping, Strutting, Waving, & also video style Hip Hop.

 

Kory "Kato" Watkins is a memeber of the Legendary Hip Hop Crew Housin' Authority. They have choreographed & performed for many artists, such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, Usher, & Chris Brown. Kato has taught all over the USA & abroad. He loves to perform, but teaching is his gift. Breaking down challenging routines for students is his specialty.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Hip Hop Jazz with Christiane Crawford

In Christiane's workshop you will develop choreography, performance skills i.e. "giving face", learn patterns and placement, create connections with other dancers and have fun! Choreography will be posted on You Tube to practice with. All levels are welcome. (Some rehearsals, especially the 2 two prior to the show, will run late).

House Dance with Odie

(Mixed Level)

House Dance is an umbrella term referring to underground club styles originating in Chicago and NYC. House Dance is done to House Music. This workshop will introduce students to core movement styles including jacking, footwork, and lofting. This special performance based workshop will use the fundamental house dance styles and build on the routine every week. This is a great way to get some exercise, meet new people, and have some fun. At the end of the workshop students will perform the piece in front of friends and family at ODC.

Originally from New York and New Jersey, Odie grew up in the east coast hip hop scene, first being exposed to “bboying” (break dancing) in front of his parents store in the south Bronx at the age of 5. After moving to the bay area in 1999, he encountered the house music scene at raves such as Home Base and became involved in the club scene, promoting for "Remedy" for over 5 years. By partying in the San Francisco nightlife he has built a following and helped expose many of the club dancers to the style. Considered the go-to-guy for Bay Area House Dance, he has hosted many famous house dancers from around the world, bringing them to San Francisco to share their knowledge. He studied the style of house dance from NYC master Brian "footwork" Green. Odie is the founding member of Flo-ology Dance Collective. He has spent the last 10 years building the west coast house dance scene, teaching from San Diego to San Francisco, spreading the knowledge and growing this culture. He has won various contest such as Flavor Groups all style contest and performed at large events such as the SF Hip Hop Festival.

 

 

 

 

Mexican Folkloric with Norberto Martinez

In this introductory class, students will be transported to the colorful, energetic and expressive world of Mexican folk culture. Students will learn about the traditional dance and music from Mexico along with its varied footwork accompaniment.
Note: Character shoes or hard-soled shoes recommended.

Norberto Martínez is a native of Yucatán peninsula, México with over 10 years experience internationally as dance instructor, choreographer and performer. He is founder/artistic director of Folklórico Atlatonín and collaborates regularly with dance companies of all styles throughout the Bay Area.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Samba with Raffaella Falchi

(Mixed)

This is an energetic and aerobic samba class incorporating several styles of Brazilain dance: Rio (Carnaval) samba, Samba Axe' (from Bahia which includes learning fun dance routines to up tempo-songs), Samba Reggae (Afro-Brazilian influences), and Frevo (a fast paced dance originating from Pernambuco).


Intermediate level: must have taken a samba class or workshop previously. Check in with the instructor if unsure.

Raffaella has been a professional Brazilian dance performer since 1998. Raffaella’s dance training and experience includes performing professionally with numerous Brazilian dance companies in the Bay Area and performing both locally and internationally both in Europe and Brazil . She has performed in numerous types of events including the SF Carnaval Ball and many SF Carnaval Parades. In 2004, she became co-founder of Sambamora Dance Company which offers dance classes, performances and costume design in the Bay Area. Raffaella’s samba class was also awarded best of the bay in 2004. She is currently teaching samba workshops through ODC/ Rhythm and Motion and UCSF Bakar Fitness Center . She also teaches youth samba classes at Out Of Site Youth Arts Center.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rhythm Tap with Tyler Knowlin

(Intermediate Level)

In this intermediate level workshop, you will learn technique and performance skills.  The bottom line, however, is education and fun.  We will learn a little bit of the history of tap dance and the roots of this amazing art form.  This will be a style of tap that people of all ages will be able to enjoy.  If you enjoy tap dancing and performing, you are not going to want to miss this class.


Tyler Knowlin has been tap dancing since age five. Originally from Connecticut, Tyler has performed in New York City with such legends as Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, Jimmy Slide, Diane Walker, Brenda Bufalino, Jason Samuels-Smith, and many more. Tyler has been in YM Magazine, for an issue on up and coming tap dancers. He attended the Academy of the Arts in Hartford, CT wherehe studied acting and dance. Tyler has been in numerous commercials, and a few independent films. He has always held dance above all else, looking to educate others and preserve the art form of Tap!

 

 

 

 

 

Salsa and Rueda with Sidney Weaverling & Ryan Mead

These 11-week-long workshops are geared to fine-tune your Salsa and Rueda dance skills for performance. Each week we will gradually build towards completion of a fun and challenging choreography, which we will present at the Student Showcase on December 10th or 11th. During the workshop, students will apply and develop their knowledge of partnering technique, turn patterns, rhythm, and body-movement, taking their studio and social dancing skills to the performance level. In each choreography we combine classic Cuban salsa moves and original moves that we develop specifically for that piece. We are inspired by great Cuban music and are excited to share our enthusiasm with you. We truly choreograph to the music, using movement to fully express the intricate and multi-layered rhythms of each song. Some prerequisites apply for all three classes. Ryan Mead has nearly two decades of experience as a percussionist. Being both dancer and percussionist, Ryan is uniquely positioned to illuminate that most fundamental, yet seldom discussed, part of dance – its connection with the music.
Sidney Weaverling has more than 10 years of experience as a teacher, performer, and choreographer. Apart from her remarkable proficiency with Cuban popular dance, she has extensive knowledge of Brazilian and African styles.

 

 

 

 

Street Dance Fusion with Nicole Klaymoon

This is a combination of House Dance, Waacking, and Release Technique.  The class includes a yoga flow warm-up, rhythm based footwork, choreography, and improvisational movement across the floor.  The class emphasizes the internal rhythm or “groove” that comes alive when we listen and surrender to the beat.   It is a space to cultivate ones authentic free-style and dance with feeling.  All levels are welcome.

Nicole Klaymoon received a B.A. in dance from UCLA. Her one-woman show, The Sixth Vowel, combines underground dance styles with
spoken-word and theater. She has toured her solo show to various festivals around the world. Some of which include, Hip-Hop Theater Festival New York and DC, Miami Project Hip-Hop, Illadelph Legends of Hip-Hop Festival in Philadelphia, OrShakespeare Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland. Klaymoon has also danced in works directed by Rennie Harris, Marc Bamuthi-Joseph, Kamilah Forbes, and Meredith Monk.

 

 

 

 

Tribal Belly Dance with Jill Parker

(flamenco & belly dance fusion copany, co-directed by Carola Zertuche of Theatro Flamenco), and Foxglove Sweethearts. Percussion with Zeke Nealy

This is an energetic class incorporating several styles of drumming. Including Congolese, Haitian, Cuban, among others. Don’t miss this opportunity to come learn from a Master Drummer with over 30 years of experience!


Zeke Nealy is a percussionist, performer, and educator living and working throughout the Bay Area for the past 25 years. Nealy served apprenticeships with legendary masters Rene Calvin, Tobadji Ngoma, Malonga Casquelourde, Jose Lorenzo, and Carlos Aldama. He considers himself a lifelong student and regularly works and studies with Jean Bonga Baptiste, Kwaku Dadey, Jacqueline Rago, Gamo Da Paz, Butch Haynes, and Zak Diouf, among others. Nealy is the director of the Haitian Dance & Drum Retreat and Congo Solo and Percussion Festival, two major annual events dedicated to the study, exploration, and performance of African derived music and culture.
